Relief for Laikipia residents as Government waives land charges

Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere welcomed the announcement, saying the technical committee would fast-track the adjudication process and help residents obtain valid ownership documents.

Residents of Laikipia County can now breathe easy after the government announced a waiver on accrued interest for land allocation charges in the Suguta Ex P&D and Luoniek Settlement Schemes.

The move is aimed at easing financial burdens and supporting communities to secure legal ownership of their land.

Principal Secretary for Lands and Physical Planning, Nixon Korir, disclosed the development during a public gathering at Posta Centre in Laikipia North.

He said the decision had been sanctioned by President William Ruto as part of the government’s commitment to addressing historical land injustices and improving land access for local communities.

Korir explained that a technical committee will soon be established to handle long-standing land disputes, particularly where parcels were irregularly acquired by unscrupulous cartels.

“I assure you, all land that was taken by cartels without your knowledge will be returned to its rightful owners. The Government is determined to restore justice and dignity to affected families,” Korir said.

He hailed the President for fostering stability in Laikipia, a county previously marked by recurring land and resource conflicts. Korir also encouraged residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to gain access to affordable and improved health services.

Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere welcomed the announcement, saying the technical committee would fast-track the adjudication process and help residents obtain valid ownership documents.

She added that the waiver would reduce financial pressure on families and allow them to invest confidently in their land.

The MP further noted that the initiative would help restore calm in areas that have experienced cycles of conflict over land and resources.

Laikipia Woman Representative Jane Kagiri, who attended the baraza, described the waiver as a timely intervention that would remove barriers to socio-economic development in the county.

Korir, accompanied by Kennedy Njenga, Director of Land Adjudication and Settlement, reiterated the ministry’s dedication to speeding up land titling across the country.

He said the announcement is part of ongoing reforms under the State Department for Lands and Physical Planning, which aim to strengthen land governance, secure tenure rights, and promote social stability in line with the Kenya Kwanza government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

The Suguta Ex P&D scheme, set up in 2002, covers roughly 56,634 acres in Laikipia North and includes 1,023 parcels. The Luoniek Settlement Scheme in Laikipia West spans about 50,972 acres, allocated mostly to Pokot and Turkana squatters.

So far, 200 parcels have been discharged, 800 remain active, and 96 files are pending resolution.
